Businessmen demands abolishment of dual taxation, broadening of tax-base

Businessmen here on Thursday urged the provincial government to take measures for elimination of double taxation and give exemption to Hayatabad Industrial Estate from additional taxes, broadening of existing tax base and reduction in property tax ratio.

The demands were made by Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Sherbaz Bilour while chairing a meeting during visit of Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Excise and Taxation, Syed Ghazi Ghazan Jamal here at the chamber house.

The participants asked the provincial government for practical steps for giving relief to covid-19 hit business community and jointly formulate policies in order to avoid creating any gulf between the relevant government departments and traders.

The meeting was attended by SCCI vice president Junaid Altaf, former FPCCI president Ghazanfar Bilour, former presidents Engineer Maqsood Anwar Pervaiz, Haji Mohammad Afzal, Riaz Arshad, Zulfiqar Ali Khan, Industrialist Association Peshawar President and executive committee member Zarak Khan, former SVP Ziaul Haq Sarhad, Engr Saad Khan Zahid, former vice president Haris Mufti, executive body members Zahoor Khan, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ihsanullah Saddar Gul, Faiz Rasool, Malik Imran Ishaq, Ishtiaq Ahmad, Ghayuar Sethi, Sanan Sethi, excise and taxation department high offcials, traders leaders.

Sherbaz Bilour said the abolishment of dual taxation is essential to address grievances of the business community. He said that the illegal and unnecessary tax notices, crackdown on business premises was tantamount to creating a gulf between the business community and government departments concerned. He urged the government to give due respect to taxpayers, because they have played a pivotal role in economic development and revenue generation in the province.

Ghazi Ghazan Jamal while responding to different queries of the business community acknowledged that the business community has played an important role in government revenue generation so it will take all possible steps to facilitate the community at every level.  

He informed the government is formulating a concrete strategy to eliminate double taxation and bringing new people under the tax net. He furthermore added the provincial excise and taxation department has reduced different taxes from eight to four.

SACM said that the department will soon launch an online system, meant to reduce interaction between taxpayers and the relevant department. He enlightened that a GIS Map survey was launched in Peshawar, which would be completed by end of December this year.

Similarly, he informed the department is going to introduce an E-payments system. Later, he agreed with proposals and reservations of SCCI president Sherbaz Bilour and members of the business community and assured them that the government will take practical steps to remove their grievances regarding double taxation and fulfillment of other demands.

Ghazanfar Bilour, Haji Muhammad Afzal, Riaz Arshad, Engr Maqsood Anwar Pervaiz, Zarak Khan, Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, Haris Mufti and others also spoke on the occasion and demanding to the immediately end the dual and illegal taxation and practical measures for broadening the existing tax-base.
